With the combine done and over with, all draft prospects move on to their pro days. The ones who had great combines, like Boston College DT B.J. Raji, don't necessarily need to do anything special. However, the ones who didn't have good combines (Andre Smith, Michael Crabtree, Chris "Beanie" Wells) will need to show what they can do. One, Crabtree, is electing to have
surgery on the stress fracture in his left foot. That's probably a good move, meaning he'll be ready by training camp for the team that drafts him. People are starting to get down on him a little but let me just remind everyone of the play he made to beat Texas. The young man just makes plays. His stock will go down a little because he won't run, but he'll still go in the top 10 and will be a sensational NFL player.
There's a lot being tossed around on what Detroit will do with the No. 1 pick. My gut says they really want to trade the pick. They have so many needs, the extra picks would come in handy in what is generally a pretty deep draft. They will set the tone for the draft. If they take Georgia QB Matt Stafford, like I have been predicting, then things fall in line pretty well after that. However, should they keep the pick and take one of the top offensive tackles, look for chaos to ensue.
Top 5 Risers
1. Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest – There's some talk he could go No. 1 overall.
2. Aaron Mabyin, DE, Penn State – Will the Browns make the leap at No. 5?
3. B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College – Could go as high as No. 4 to Seattle
4. Everette Brown, DE, Florida State – He could sneak into the top 10
5. Mark Sanchez, QB, USC – Scouts are in love with his intangibles
Top 5 fallers
1. Michael Crabtree, WR, Texas Tech – Might slip to SF at No. 10.
2. Andre Smith, OT, Alabama – Once unthinkable, could fall out of top 10.
3. Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State – Poor combine, not as fast as many thought.
4. Chris "Beanie" Wells, RB, Ohio State – Also had a poor combine, didn't run particulary well.
5. Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State – Pro day will be key for senior from Stillwater.
Mock Draft 3.0
1. Detroit Lions -- Matt Stafford, QB, Georgia
Last Mock: Stafford
I'm not as sold on this pick as I have been the past two weeks. I could see them taking Stafford, or Wake Forest uber-LB Aaron Curry or one of the top offensive tackles in this draft. Now we're also hearing rumors the Lions might still be interested in Denver QB Jay Cutler. Should they land him, it would probably cost them the No. 20 pick, not this pick. Should that happen, the pick will probably be Curry or Baylor OT Jason Smith.
2. St. Louis Rams -- Jason Smith, OT, Baylor
Last Mock: Smith
Had Crabtree run at his pro day, I could see him possibly going here as the replacement for Torry Holt. But the Rams need help up front and Smith is the top-rated prospect.
3. Kansas City -- Aaron Curry, LB, Wake Forest
Last Mock: Curry
Now that the Chiefs have pulled off the trade to get QB Matt Cassel, there could be some pull to take Crabtree here and give him another weapon besides TE Tony Gonzalez. But Curry is the top overall rated player on most draft boards and the Chiefs were awful on defense last year.
4. Seattle Seahawks -- B.J. Raji, DT, Boston College
Last Mock: Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia
This is the third different player I have had in this spot. The Seahawks just landed the top free agent wide receiver on the market, inking TJ Houshmandzadeh to a five-year deal. That pretty much ends any talk of Crabtree going here. I still think Monroe is a huge possibility, or one of the two Smiths. But Raji fits an immediate need with DT Rocky Bernard leaving via free agency. New coach Jim Mora, Jr. is a defensive-minded coach and Raji is a big man that would clog up the middle and allow their fast LBs and DEs to get up field.
5. Cleveland Browns -- Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State
Last Mock: Malcolm Jenkins, CB, Ohio State
I think the Browns are somehow hoping Curry falls to them, but he won't. Look for them to grab one of the drafts fastest risers in Maybin. He is durable, productive and is extremely fast. He can play OLB or get down as DE. This is exactly what the Browns sagging defense needs.
6. Cincinnati Bengals -- Eugene Monroe, OT, Virginia
Last Mock: Andre Smith, OT, Alabama
There might be some pull here to grab Crabtree now that TJ Houshmandzadeh has left for Seattle. While the fans may want Crabtree, because he'll make great headlines, Monroe is what the Bengals need. They have got to keep QB Carson Palmer healthy.
