The Dream Draft

Defense wins championships. So will it be Deion or L.T. in round one? Several NFL Draft experts offer their all-time Dream Draft

By Football.com Staff
Updated: February 28, 2009

What if you could assemble a dozen players from any draft class in history, but with a few parameters: only one player from their respective round, and the goal of the draft would be to build a well-balanced nucleus that a start-up franchise could be built around.

Feel like you're day-dreaming?

Imagine the possibilities: Joe Montana in the third round … Terrell Davis in the sixth … Johnny Unitas in the ninth.

This article exposes some of the great bargains of all-time in their respective round, but it also serves as a fun exercise in draft management, as the participating experts found out.

The participants:

> Football.com staff
> Scott Wright, founder and president, DraftCountdown.com
> Matt Falkster, president, DraftSeason.com
> Ryan McCrystal, president and senior writer, DraftAce.com

Each expert was allowed to draft without the benefit of knowing who the other experts had selected. There were a lot of common selections among the experts, but in several rounds the experts were torn in different directions.

Here are the results, with a round-by-round breakdown for each pick below …

Round 1
The possibilities are limitless. Running backs Jim Brown and Barry Sanders would help to build a strong base for a team, as would tackle Anthony Munoz and countless franchise quarterbacks. And you'd be a fool to dismiss Jerry Rice, the greatest receiver of all time. But Football.com, instead, opted for an impact player on defense, waiting for later rounds to solve the needs at the skill positions. Who better than Lawrence Taylor, the second overall selection in 1982?

The panel agreed with the need for defense. Wright went with Deion Sanders, arguably the greatest cornerback ever to suit up, while McCrystal agreed on Taylor.

Falkster decided to go with Brown, saying, "He's the best running back to play the game and possibly the best player, period."
