Armedforces Bowl

The Armed Forces Bowl has been played annually since 2003. Based in Fort Worth, Texas, the game is played at Amon G. Carter Stadium on the campus of Texas Christian University. From 2003-2005, the conference tie-in went to the Big 12 Conference. However, only one Big 12 team actually played in the bowl during that time because the conference did not have enough bowl eligible teams in two of the three seasons.

The inaugural game pitted the Boise State Broncos against the TCU Horned Frogs. Boise State defeated TCU 34-31 on the Horned Frogs home field. Broncos quarterback Ryan Dinwiddie was named MVP. The game was sponsored by PlainsCapital Bank and was known as the Fort Worth Bowl.

The only appearance from a Big 12 school came in 2005 when the Kansas Jayhawks crushed the Houston Cougars 42-13. Kansas quarterback Jason Swanson was named game MVP.

Beginning in 2006, the game became known as the Armed Forces Bowl and featured a school from the Mountain West Conference against a program from either the Conference USA or the Pac-10. The two conferences will alternate bowl appearances from year to year. That same year, Bell Helicopter assumed the role of sponsor. The 2006 matchup featured the Utah Utes against the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes with Utah pulling out a 25-13 victory. Utah placekicker Louie Sakoda was named game MVP. It was the first time the award did not go to a quarterback. The 2006 game had a $600,000 payout to each school.

This year’s Armed Forces Bowl will feature a Pac-10 school against a Mountain West opponent, assuming the Pac-10 has enough bowl eligible teams. Next year’s game will once again feature a program from Conference USA. The previous four games were played on December 23. However, this year’s game is scheduled for December 31.
