The Chick-fil-A Bowl has been played annually since 1968. From 1968-1997, the game was known simply as the Peach Bowl. Located in Atlanta, Georgia, the Chick-fil-A Bowl has been played in three stadiums in its history. From 1968-1970, the game was played on the campus of Georgia Tech University at Grant Field. Beginning in 1971, the bowl game called Atlanta Fulton County Stadium home. The game was moved to the Georgia Dome in 1992. Since 1993, the game has featured a matchup between teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference. The payout in 2006 for the ACC team was $3.25 million and $2.4 million for the SEC team.
The fast food restaurant chain Chick-fil-A became the official sponsor of the Peach Bowl in 1998. Beginning in 2006, Chick-fil-A acquired complete naming rights over the game. The bowl game has been a sellout for ten consecutive years. The game is played on December 31 and is televised on ESPN.
North Carolina State University has made the most appearances in the Chick-fil-A Bowl with seven. Clemson is second on the list with six appearances. Georgia and North Carolina are tied for third with five appearances.
The most successful program in the bowl’s history has been Louisiana State University. LSU is undefeated in four appearances. LSU is the only school to never lose in this bowl game. Their most recent appearance in the game came in 2005 when they absolutely crushed Miami 40-3. It was the first time in the bowl’s history that both teams enter the game ranked in the top ten.
Last year’s contest featured the Georgia Bulldogs and Virginia Tech Hokies. Georgia pulled out a 31-24 victory in a highly competitive matchup. Quarterback Matthew Stafford and linebacker Tony Taylor were named the offensive and defensive MVP’s of the game.
