Hawaii Bowl

The Hawaii Bowl has been played annually since 2002. The game is played at Aloha Stadium on the island of Oahu. The game features teams from either the Pac-10 or Conference USA against a team from the Western Athletic Conference. As part of the bowl’s agreement with the WAC, Hawaii is guaranteed a bid in the game if they are bowl eligible. The game’s official sponsor is Sheraton Hotels and Resorts. The 2006 game had a payout of $398,000 to each school.

The inaugural Hawaii Bowl featured a matchup between the Tulane Green Wave and the Hawaii Warriors . Tulane won the game 36-28. Hawaii returned the following year to defeat the Houston Cougars 54-48 in triple overtime. Quarterback Timmy Chang and wide receiver Chad Owens were named MVP’s. The 2004 game featured Hawaii against the Alabama-Birmingham Blazers. Hawaii won the game 59-40 behind the play of Chang and Owens who, once again were named MVP’s of the game.

The 2005 contest was notable for a few reasons. It was the first time Hawaii did not appear in the game. Also, it was the first ever bowl appearance for Central Florida. Unfortunately, Central Florida lost to Nevada 49-48 in overtime.

Last year’s matchup served as the first time that a Pac-10 appeared in the game. The Arizona State Sun Devils took on Hawaii. Led by quarterback Colt Brennan and wide receiver Jason Rivers, Hawaii won the game 41-24.

Conference USA will return to the game in 2007. It is likely that their opponent will not be Hawaii because the Warriors appear headed for a BCS bowl. This year’s Hawaii Bowl will be played on December 23. It will be the first time the game will not be played on either Christmas or Christmas Eve. The game will be televised on ESPN.
