The Humanitarian Bowl has been played annually since 1997. The game is held in Boise, Idaho on the blue turf of Bronco Stadium. The inaugural game pitted the Cincinnati Bearcats against the Utah State Aggies. Cincinnati won the contest 35-19. The game currently features teams from the Western Athletic Conference and the Atlantic Coast Conference. The team from the WAC is usually the conference champion.
From 2004-2006, the game was known as the MPC Computers Bowl. The bowl game is famous for being the longest running cold weather bowl game in operation. Each school receives a $750,000 payout. UCLA did not accept their invitation to the 2001 game because schools are required to purchase a minimum number of tickets and provide a corporate sponsor.
Earlier this year, the decision was made to once again refer to the game as the Humanitarian Bowl. This year’s game will be sponsored by Roady’s Truck Stops. Boise State has made more appearances than any other program. In four appearances, the Broncos have compiled a 3-1 record. The Boston College Eagles defeated Boise State 27-21 in 2005.
The Humanitarian Bowl has gone to overtime only once in its short existence. In 2004, the Fresno State Bulldogs outlasted the Virginia Cavaliers 37-34. No team other than Boise State has made more than one appearance in the Humanitarian Bowl.
Last year’s matchup was played on December 31 between the Miami Hurricanes and the Nevada Wolfpack. Miami rallied back to avoid the upset and defeated Nevada 21-20. This year’s contest is scheduled for December 31 again. The game after the 2003 season is the only Humanitarian Bowl to be played after New Year’s Day. In that contest, Georgia Tech slammed Tulsa 52-10.
