The Poinsettia Bowl has been played annually since 2005. Much like the Holiday Bowl, the game is held at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California. Since its inception, the game has been sponsored by San Diego County Credit Union. The game features a team from the Mountain West Conference against an at-large opponent. The participants of the 2006 contest received a $750,000 payout.
The inaugural game featured a matchup between Navy and Colorado State. Navy defeated Colorado State 51-30 to win the first Poinsettia Bowl. Running back Reggie Campbell and linebacker Tyler Tidwell were named offensive and defensive MVP’s respectively.
Last year’s matchup featured the Texas Christian University Horned Frogs against the Northern Illinois Huskies. The Poinsettia Bowl organizers would have invited Army but the did not have enough wins to make them bowl eligible. TCU dominated Northern Illinois on their way to a 37-7 victory. TCU quarterback Jeff Ballard and defensive end Tommy Blake were named the offensive and defensive MVP’s of the game.
Navy has accepted an invitation to play in the 2007 Poinsettia Bowl. Navy will also be invited to play in the 2008, 2009 and 2010 games as long as they are bowl eligible. Navy clinched their spot in this year’s contest after defeating North Texas in the highest scoring game in college football history. Navy went on the road to beat North Texas 74-62. It has been a big year for the Midshipmen. Earlier in the year, Navy snapped a 33-game losing streak against Notre Dame with an overtime victory in South Bend.
This year’s game will be played on December 20, 2007, making it the first bowl game of the year. The game will be televised on ESPN.
