The Sun Bowl has been played annually since 1935 making it one of the oldest bowl games to be played continuously. From 1935-1937, the game was played at El Paso High School Stadium. In the inaugural Sun Bowl, the El Paso All-Stars defeated Ranger (Texas) 25-21. The game was played at Kidd Field from 1938-1962.
The game was moved to Sun Bowl Stadium on the campus of the University of Texas El Paso in 1963. Over the years, the game has undergone many name changes. The only time the name did not include Sun Bowl was from 1990-1993. During that time, the game was referred to as the John Hancock Bowl.
Since 2004, the sponsor has been Helen of Troy Limited. Wells Fargo previously sponsored the game from 1996-2003. This year’s game will be called the Brut Sun Bowl. It will feature a team from the Pac-10 versus a team from either the Big 12 or Big East. Each school will receive a payout of $1.9 million. The Sun Bowl has been televised on CBS since 1968.
Notable players that have been named game MVP in the past include Hall of Fame running back Thurman Thomas, linebacker Cornelius Bennett, recently retired NFL running back Priest Holmes and former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Freddie Mitchell.
A team from the Pac-10 has won the last three Sun Bowls. In 2004, Arizona State defeated Purdue 27-23. The following year the UCLA Bruins came back to defeat the Northwestern Wildcats 50-38 in an offensive shootout. The high-scoring continued in last year’s game between Oregon State and Missouri. Trailing by 14 in the fourth quarter, Oregon State rallied back. After a touchdown made it 38-37, Oregon State head coach Mike Riley decided to go for the two-point conversion. Running back Yvenson Bernard slipped past the goal line giving Oregon State a 39-38 victory.
