Duke University- Duke Blue Devils

Located in Durham, NC, Duke University is a prominent academic institution that is better known for its basketball program. This is due in large part to the fact that the football program has not had a winning season since 1994. Before this awful stretch, the Duke Blue Devils football won the 1989 ACC championship under coach Steve Spurrier. In total, Duke has won seven ACC championships. The stadium is named after former coach Wallace Wade, whose 1938 squad shut out every opponent until losing to USC 7-3 in the Rose Bowl. Oddly, the 1942 Rose Bowl game was played in Durham, NC at Wallace Wade Stadium because of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

2007 Duke Blue Devils Outlook:

The Duke Blue Devils are coming off a winless season. It’s hard to find anything positive about a 0-12 team, but let’s give it a shot. If new offensive coordinator can put sophomore quarterback Thaddeus Lewis in good situations to make plays, the Blue Devils should put up some points. Defensively, the Blue Devils are just plain bad. Last season, the defensive unit surrendered 33.8 points per game. In order for the Blue Devils to win football games, they are going to have to score a lot of points. When viewing their schedule, there is no automatic win and that spells trouble for the Blue Devils.

Duke Blue Devils Head Coach Profile

In his first four seasons as head coach, Ted Roof has compiled a 5-34 record. Miraculously, Roof has managed to keep his job. Prior to taking over as head coach, Roof was the defensive coordinator for the Blue Devils. In the early 80’s, Roof was a standout linebacker at Georgia Tech. Roof has decided to take over the defense for the upcoming seasons in hopes of improving the maligned unit.

Duke Blue Devils- Key Departures/Players to Watch

QB Thaddeus Lewis must lead the offense with more consistency. His primary target should be senior WR Jomar Wright. The most productive player on defense is junior middle linebacker Michael Tauiliili. He is a tackling machine.
