Louisiana State University – LSU Tigers

Founded in 1860 and now boasting an enrollment of well over 30,000 students, Louisiana State University, located in Baton Rouge, LA, is a member of the Southeastern Athletic Conference, representing the western division. Their colors are purple and gold, and their mascot is the Tiger; however, it is more affectionately known to local fans as the Fightin' Tiger or the Bayou Bengal. Steeped in a deep French-Cajun culture with a southern twist, it is entirely common to see the same fluer-de-lis throughout the university and associated with LSU sports, as you would see in the city of New Orleans and throughout the state of Louisiana. In most recent years, the Tigers have not only enjoyed sitting atop the SEC West, but have taken a handful of SEC Championships as well as a shared National Championship in 2003.

2007 LSU Tigers Outlook:

Overall, the Tigers do show a quiet potential to run the table in the SEC and find themselves in a position to play for a BCS Championship. Anything can happen in the SEC, but the 2007 match ups against Florida and Auburn will offer LSU the opportunity to avenge their two losses from last season. They may have a few tight ones, but if well prepared, they should push through the SEC West to the SEC Championship game.

2007 LSU Tigers Head Coach Profile

Les Miles built a reputation of a “successful head coach” with a short stint at Oklahoma State University. After getting their program turned around and the Cowboys back into the bowl picture, he was offered the opportunity to head-up the program of at an immediate national contender - LSU. Jumping at the opportunity, Miles has amassed a 22 – 4 record through his first two seasons in Baton Rouge.

His approach to the game is aggressive on both sides of the ball. He balances the attack on offense, taking appropriate shots down field and accumulating more big plays in a game than some schools experience in a season. Defensively, you can expect Miles and his staff to bring the heat from all directions to disrupt opponents rush and pass attacks, truly making them one of the most feared defenses in all of college football.

LSU Tigers Key Departures and Players To Watch

Beyond the obvious departures of JaMarcus Russell, Dwayne Bowe and Craig Davis, the Tigers lost their superstar in the defensive backfield, Laron Landry. No doubt Landry will enjoy a wonderful NFL career, but the departing senior leaves the biggest shoes to be filled.

Jacob Hester is the top returning RB, and as in years past, he will expect to share carries with other backs. Alley Broussard's sudden departure from the team will leave a hole that needs to be filled. Matt Flynn will enjoy a productive year passing, and will open the eyes of JaMarcus Russell admirers. Flynn has world's of ability, and 2007 will be his year to own and lead.

Defensively, the Tigers return DE Tyson Jackson, LB Ali Highsmith and DB Chevis Jackson. All were starters and impact players for the Tigers in 2006, and have unlimited, all-American potential for the 2007 season.
