University Of South Carolina – South Carolina Gamecocks Located in Columbia, SC, and founded in 1801, the University of South Carolina was one of our American universities that wasn't on the national map until frat guys across this great nation thought it would be cool to wear hats that said, “Cocks.” How ironic. Boasting a student body of over 27,000, this “Southern” USC draws a student body from the entire southern region as well as South Carolinians. The Gamecocks are now truly within the Steve Spurrier football era, and they continue to show signs of hitting that next level. 2007 South Carolina Gamecocks Outlook: 2006 ended on a high note and a lot of points scored for one of the SEC's bowl representatives. Coach Spurrier has the program on the verge of “something bigger,” and once the ice has been broken, look for this program to pump out consistent 10 win seasons! I think this year could be incredibly interesting for the USC Gamecocks, as the SEC East looks to be on a more level playing field than it has been in the last 10 years. The offense is suspect, but the D is returning 10 starters. If the offensive line continues to improve through the summer and into the season, South Carolina could make some noise in the SEC East. 2007 South Carolina Gamecocks Schedule

South Carolina Gamecocks Head Coach Profile While at Florida, Steve Spurrier was known as an offensive genius with more weapons of mass destruction than Al Qaeda. Fortunately, his weapons were of the legal variety, and he created a national powerhouse for the Gators of Gainesville. He's now attempting to achieve the same results in Columbia, SC, after a short stint as the head coach of the Washington Redskins. He has shown steady improvement through his first two years, and if he can get his offense firing on a few more cylinders in 2007, he'll enjoy his most successful year at USC. South Carolina Gamecocks – Players To Watch/Key Departures The South Carolina defense is returning 10 starters from the 2006 squad that finished 8-5 with a bowl win. Keep an eye on the improved chemistry of this defensive unit, as they were responsible for keeping the Gamecocks in several games last season. Offensively, it's no secret that QB Blake Mitchell and Coach Spurrier have had a tumultuous relationship. If they can work out their differences, and Mitchell can offer some consistent play, the offense has a chance to put some points on the board. |
