University Of Tennessee – Tennessee Volunteers “I wish that I was on ole Rocky Top, down in the Tennessee hills...” I never understood why I had to learn that song in school while growing up in Missouri. Regardless, I can't help but sing along with the more than 100,000 fans that enjoy the orange and white checkers of Neyland Stadium's end zones. Sometimes I even clap my hands...but only when I'm feeling ridiculous. The Volunteer faithful will have Smokey (the dog) decked out and ready to go in Knoxville, TN, where the University of Tennessee is located, and offers “formal” education to a student body of 31,000 . 2007 Tennessee Volunteers Outlook: The Vols surprised a lot of people last year by playing close in some huge SEC match ups. They showed promise in the SEC East, yet couldn't quite get past Florida in their head to head meeting – a game that has seemingly become the barometer by which both teams can measure their success in a season. Look for this year to be no different. Florida will be good, but their level of competitiveness within the SEC is in flux, and thus opens the door for the Vols to come storming in. The SEC East will be tight in 2007. UT needs to get off to a great start when they visit Berkeley to open the season against the California Golden Bears. Opening against this year's Pac-10 will be a great preparation for a long SEC season. 2007 Tennessee Volunteers Schedule

Unfortunately, in the fickle business of sports, sometimes that's not enough. With a career winning percentage of .770, Fulmer still found himself on the hot-seat in recent years due to one losing season in UT orange. Regardless of that single, disappointing season, he rebounded to finish second in the SEC East in 2006, while taking Tennessee to yet another bowl game. He has enjoyed immense success as the Volunteers head coach, including an undefeated 13-0 season in 1998 to capture a national championship. 2007 will be his 16th season as the Vols head coach. 2007 Tennessee Volunteers – Players To Watch/Key Departures Robert Meachem is obviously the first name that comes to mind in regards to key losses. No doubt the Saints will enjoy his presence in their NFL attack, but Tennessee is left with some big shoes to fill in the wide receiver position. Jayson Swain is surely ready for the spotlight at that position, and ready to show the NFL what kind of game he can deliver as well. Eric Ainge will get the nod at quarterback, and it will be another toss up as to what fans will see. In the past he's shown moments of greatness, quickly followed by silly mistakes. If he has continued to mature well this off-season, he'll have the opportunity to lead the Volunteers toward the division lead in the SEC East, and possible Heisman chat for himself. |
