Vanderbilt University – Vanderbilt Commodores

Vanderbilt: Why does it always seem like they're the red-headed stepchild of the SEC? A phenomenal school located in Nashville, TN, that plays host to a modest 11,000 plus students - they're simply not known for football. Perhaps another big win over a conference power such as in state rival Tennessee, would continue to stoke the football fire in Nashville. They haven't enjoyed a bowl berth since 1983, and playing in the SEC certainly isn't the easiest way to rack up several easy conference wins. Regardless, Vandy finds a way to slap some games in the “W” column, and even an SEC game on occasion.

2007 Vanderbilt Commodores Outlook:

If the outlook has been cloudy for the past several seasons, 2007 could be described as having “periods of afternoon sunshine.” The Vanderbilt Commodores enjoyed some decent recruiting during the Jay Cutler era, and are now looking like they could threaten a 6 win season to become bowl eligible. They'll have their work cut out for them, but the SEC East is looking weaker than in years past – they could very well threaten to win a couple, or even a few games in the conference, helping the program approach that next level.

2007 Vanderbilt Commodores Head Coach Profile

Bobby Johnson came to Vanderbilt in 2002 from Furman University, where he took his team to the NCAA Div. I-AA title game in 2001. Success in the SEC hasn't been immediate, but after finishing 2-9 for 3 seasons, Johnson and Commodores more than doubled their win total, by accumulating a respectable 5 win season in 2005. Jay Cutler was instrumental in helping Johnson tally a few wins, just as Johnson was instrumental in preparing Cutler to play at the next level. In the past two seasons, coach Johnson seems to have Vanderbilt on the cusp of breaking through to the next level. 2007 could very well be his best shot at taking the Commodores to their first bowl in over 20 years.

2007 Vanderbilt Commodores – Players To Watch/Key Departures

Commodore success rests squarely upon the shoulders of quarterback Chris Nickson. (No pressure, young man!) It's easy to say, because he seems poised and ready for the challenge! As he matures, so do the Vanderbilt Commodores chances of getting to the next level. Jeff Jennings will be in the offensive backfield with Nickson after missing all of 2006 with an injury. His athleticism should add to the Vandy attack.

  1. This will be a lousy football team in 2008...a real 'speed bag' getting punched out...even at Miami [ Ohio] to start the 2008 season...4 wins would be a miracle this year.
