Phil Simms - CBS
Lead Play-by-Play Announcer: CBS
Phil Simms isn't just a Super Bowl MVP, but a Super Bowl announcer. A 15-year NFL veteran, Simms one of the highest profile quarterbacks of his era. He was the MVP for Super Bowl XXI, as he led the New York Giants over the Denver Broncos in a 39-20 victory. He went to the Pro Bowl twice and passed for over 33,000 yards. He also called Super Bowl XXX, XXXII, XXXV and XXXVIII. Unlike other high-profile quarterbacks, Simms' college performance was unspectacular. He played for Morehead State in Kentucky, close to his childhood home. However, the 49ers coach Bill Walsh scouted him and there was a move to draft Simms over Joe Montana. Instead, Simms was the first round pick of the New York Giants in 1979, a major surprise. As a rookie, he won his first five starts. Injuries marred his early career, such as when he broke his thumb in the 1983 season. Things came together in 1986 when the Giants won 14 games. In the 1986 Super Bowl, Simms set records for consecutive completions, accuracy and passer rating. One bit of trivia: He's the first sports star to utter the words, "I'm going to Disneyland!" after a championship win. In 14 seasons, all with the NY Giants, Simms threw 2,576 completions and 199 touchdowns. He set Giants records for passes attempted and completed, by game, season and career. In 1994, Simms retired and in 1995, the Giants retired his number. Soon after retiring, Simms moved to NBC's NFL coverage, announcing the Super Bowl. In 1998, he moved to CBS, paired first with Greg Gumbel. Currently, he's paired with Jim Nantz for play-by-play coverage.
