Bio

Ángel Fabián di María Hernández, known by the simplified name of Ángel di María, was born in Rosario, Argentina on 14 February 1988. An attacking midfielder, who is able to play on either wing or in a central position, he is predominantly deployed on the right wing. Known for his creative talents, long-distance shooting and ability to retain possession, he is considered one of the best attacking players around.

As a youth team player, di María joined local club Rosario Central in 2001 and made his professional debut in 2005. Before long, he attracted attention from various European clubs and opted to sign for Benfica in the summer of 2007. During his time in Portugal, di María continued to enhance his reputation as one of the great prospects in world football. The 2009-10 season saw him score 10 goals and contribute 19 assists in all competitions, as the club went on to win the Portuguese Liga. His performances drew the attention of Real Madrid, who signed him in the summer transfer window.

Since arriving at Real Madrid, di María has established himself as a key player for the team and has continued to make a name for himself with his creative play, reaching double figures for assists in each of his seasons with the side so far. He contributed to a La Liga title success in the 2011–12 campaign, under the management of José Mourinho. During the 2013 summer transfer window, he was strongly linked with a move away from the team, but received the firm backing of new manager, Carlo Ancelotti.

Di María made his debut for Argentina's senior national team in 2008 and has since gone on to establish himself as a regular in the side. In addition, at youth level, he helped his country to win the 2007 FIFA World Youth Championship and gold at the 2008 Olympic Games.
