ADO Den Haag was first established back in February 1905. Originally called Alles Door Oefening or simply ADO, the team merged with Holland Sport in the 1970s and then with another club from the city in 1996, creating its current incarnation. 'Alles Door Oefening' is a Dutch phrase, which translates to 'Everything Through Practice' in English.

ADO Den Haag maintain rivalries with two of the big three Dutch clubs, Ajax and Feyenoord. However, despite being from one of the Netherlands' biggest cities, ADO Den Haag have been unable to achieve the same levels of success as those clubs. Both rivalries have been notable for controversial incidents over the years. In 2004, a match with PSV was abandoned due to racist chanting. In 2011, a match between ADO and Ajax was marred by anti-semitic chanting from ADO supporters. After the game, ADO Den Haag midfielder Lex Immers was filmed in a bar joining in with the chants.

Over the years, ADO have achieved notable success, especially during the 1940s and 1960s. In the 1941-42 season, ADO were crowned Dutch champions and they repeated the feat the following season; a season which included a remarkable 8-2 victory over a Heerenveen side which contained the legendary Abe Lenstra. During the 1960s, ADO reached the final of the KNVB Cup in 1963, '64 and '66. They lifted the trophy for the first time in 1968, beating Ajax in the final. A second success in the competition would follow in 1975.

Notable former players include Remco Boere, Dmitri Bulykin and Wesley Verhoek.

Since 2007, ADO Den Haag have played their home matches at the Kyocera Stadion. The stadium, which replaced their former ground, Zuiderpark, holds a maximum of 15,000 supporters and is noted for its excellent security, which includes CCTV images of every spectator.
