Bio

Andrea Pirlo was born in Flero, Italy on 19 May 1979. Playing as a deep-lying central midfielder, he is considered one of the pioneers of the modern 'regista' role. Pirlo is known for his passing, technique, vision and set piece skills, as well as his ability to find space in midfield and orchestrate play for both club and country. As a result, he has been nicknamed 'l'architetto', which translates to 'the architect'.

A product of Brescia's youth academy, Pirlo graduated and played for the senior side from 1995 until 1998, at which point he joined Internazionale. His time with the club was ultimately unsuccessful, as he failed to establish himself in the first team and spent significant time out on loan to Reggina and his former club, Brescia. Then, in the summer of 2001, he completed a move to rivals AC Milan.

During his time with Milan, Pirlo established himself as one of Europe's elite midfielders, helping the club to win two UEFA Champions League trophies, in 2002–03 and 2006–07, as well as two Serie A titles, in 2003–04 and 2010–11. His best goalscoring season came in 2002–03, when he scored nine goals in all competitions. However, at the end of the 2010-11 season, his contract expired and ahead of the 2011-12 campaign, he moved to Juventus. During his first season, Pirlo helped Juve to win the Serie A title, going the full season unbeaten. His performances saw him named Serie A Player of the Year.

In international football, Pirlo has earned over 100 caps for Italy and is one of the country's most-capped players ever. He was a member of the squad which won the 2006 FIFA World Cup and was named as Man of the Match for his performance in the final. He was subsequently included in the World Cup All-Star team and was also named as a member of the UEFA Euro 2012 Team of the Tournament.
