Bio

Ashley Cole was born in Stepney, London on 20 December 1980. Noted for his speed, work rate, defensive ability and attacking skills, he is widely regarded as one of the best full backs of his generation and spent much of his career being praised as the best left back in world football.

A boyhood Arsenal fan, Cole joined the club as a youth team player and made his debut for the senior side in 1999. After a loan spell with Crystal Palace in 1999-00, he returned to Arsenal and established himself as the club's first choice left back. Over the course of the years that followed, he became a key member of the 'double' winning team of 2001-02 and the 'Invincibles' team of 2003-04, who went through the entire league season unbeaten. He was named in the PFA Team of the Year in 2002, 2004 and 2005, as well as the UEFA Team of the Year in 2004. However, during the summer of 2006, he became linked with a controversial move to rivals Chelsea and signed for the club on transfer deadline day.

Upon arriving at Chelsea, Cole continued his fine form and helped The Blues to win four FA Cups as well as the 2009-10 Premier League title. He was voted as the Chelsea Players' Player of the Year for 2008–09 and 2010–11 and was named in the PFA Team of the Year again in 2011. In the 2011-12 season, he played a significant role in the team winning the UEFA Champions League for the first time, while the following year he helped them win the UEFA Europa League.

Cole made his England debut in 2001 and has since made over 100 appearances, becoming one of the country's most-capped players ever. He has participated in numerous major competitions and was named in the UEFA Euro 2004 Team of the Tournament. In 2010, he was voted as the England Player of the Year.
