Bio

Bastian Schweinsteiger was born in Kolbermoor, West Germany on 1 August 1984. Originally a winger, over the years he has transitioned into one of the world's best central midfielders. Schweinsteiger is known for his work rate, passing, technique, dribbling ability and tackling. These skills help him to take control matches from midfield and dictate games. His intelligent off-the-ball movement, tendency to hit long range shots and his skill from set pieces also help to make him a direct goal threat.

Having started his youth career with FV Oberaudorf and TSV 1860 Rosenheim, Schweinsteiger joined the Bayern Munich youth academy in the summer of 1998. After winning Under 17 and Under 19 Bundesliga titles in 2001 and 2002, he made his debut for the senior side during the 2002-03 season and went on to make 17 appearances in all competitions, helping the team to complete a Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal double.

Despite being briefly sent back to the reserve team by Felix Magath at the start of the 2005-06 campaign, Schweinsteiger became an integral part of the Bayern Munich team over the next few years, helping them to win additional league and cup doubles in 2004–05, 2005–06, 2007–08 and 2009–10. His greatest success came about in the 2012-13 season, as Bayern won the Bundesliga, DFB-Pokal and UEFA Champions League and Schweinsteiger was named as the Footballer of the Year in Germany. His manager, Jupp Heynckes, described him as being the best midfield player in the world.

On the international stage, Schweinsteiger earned his 100th cap for Germany in 2013. Over the years, he has represented his country in a number of major international competitions and helped the team to reach the final of UEFA Euro 2008. His performances at the 2010 FIFA World Cup were impressive enough to earn him a place in the tournament's All-Star Team.
