CAF Champions League Wrap: Orlando Pirates stun Zamalek

By Football News

Orlando Pirates strengthened their position at the top of CAF Champions League Group A with a stunning 4-1 win over Zamalek on Saturday.

The South African side came into the fixture off the back of a surprise away win over seven-time winners Al Ahly, but were again firm underdogs against Egyptian opposition ahead of Zamalek's visit.

Roger De Sa's men made an encouraging start to proceedings, going ahead in the 27th minute when Lennox Bacela turned well before rifling the ball home to give the hosts the lead.

They were immediately pegged back, however, as Shikabala restored parity just two minutes later with a cool finish following a fine pass from Ahmed Eid Abdel Malek.

But the Pirates did not let that blow shake their belief, and they were ahead again shortly after the restart when Bacela turned provider for Tlou Segolela to produce a brilliant finish.

Further goals from Sifiso Myeni and Daine Klate only emphasised the hosts' dominance and ensured they would remain in control of the group ahead of the return fixtures.

Saturday also saw Leopards' grip on second place loosen, as Al Ahly earned their first win of the campaign in the Republic of the Congo.

They were forced to work hard for the 1-0 victory, with only Walid Soliman's 41st-minute strike for the Egyptian visitors separating the teams.
