Colombian Primera A Wrap: Santa Fe book top spot
By Football News
Santa Fe have clinched first place heading into the quarter-finals of the Primera A's Apertura championship despite a draw with Atletico Huila.
Despite going behind in the second minute away to Huila and having Cristian Martinez Borja sent off two minutes later, Santa Fe recovered quickly to equalise, before holding on for a draw, which kept them top of Colombia's Primera A, ahead of Atletico Nacional and Itagui.
The result secured Santa Fe the top ranking for the quarter-finals of the Apertura championship, while Deportivo Cali moved up to fourth with a 2-1 win away to Envigado.
At Huila's Estadio Guillermo Plazas Alcid on Sunday, Carlos Diaz snatched the lead for the hosts after just 116 seconds, nodding the ball home when he was left unmarked in the penalty area.
Things went from bad to worse for Santa Fe in the fourth minute when Borja was shown a straight red card but the visitors drew level in the 11th minute when Juan David Roa scored.
Despite having an extra player, Huila were unable to breach Santa Fe's defence again and when the hosts' Marco Canchila was sent off with 17 minutes remaining, a draw was all but confirmed as both sides sat back.
Santa Fe moved to 33 points, taking them above Nacional again, who drew 1-1 away to Cucuta Deportivo.
Itagui moved into third with a 1-1 draw against Deportivo Pasto but could be overhauled by Millonarios if they defeat Alianza Petrolera on Monday.
In Sunday's other game, Cali scored at the start and the end of the second half to claim victory at Envigado's Estadio Polideportivo Sur.
Subsitute Edixon Perea scored the opener for Cali after a sharp move through midfield, getting on the end of Brayan Perea's clever flick to volley the ball past Envigado goalkeeper Jimmy Schmidt.
Cristian Arango equalised for the home side in the 75th minute but Carlos Lizarazo stole victory for Cali in the first minute of second-half stoppage time, firing the ball into the top corner from over 25 metres out.
Once Caldas claimed a spot in the quarter-finals of Colombia's championship for the first half of the year with a 2-0 win over Patriotas Boyaca, while Deportes Tolima also secured a top-eight spot despite their 1-0 loss to La Equidad.
In other Primera A results, Boyaca Chico drew 1-1 with Deportes Quindio and Medellin overcame Junior 1-0.
