Copa Libertadores wrap: Tijuana stun Corinthians
By Football News
Mexican outfit Tijuana stunned reigning champions Corinthians 1-0 in the Copa Libertadores on Wednesday.
Despite boasting a star-studded squad that contains the likes of Alexandre Pato, Paolo Guerrero and Renato Augusto, Corinthians have struggled to put wins on the board recently.
Heading into the match, they had drawn six of their last seven matches and as a result they occupy eighth spot on the Campeonato Paulista table in Brazil.
They were still favourites to win their trip to Mexico to face Tijuana but were undone by a side who sit fourth in the Liga MX.
The only goal of the game was scored by Argentine defender Javier Gandolfi with 25 minutes remaining to delight the home fans at Estadio Caliente.
Tijuana now sit on top of Group 5 with three wins from as many matches, while Corinthians sit second in the group with four points.
Libertad came from two goals down to claim a point in a 2-2 draw against Sporting Cristal.
Paraguayan side Libertad topped the Group 2 table with two wins from as many matches heading into the match and they extended their unbeaten run in the competition with a valuable point against their Peruvian opponents.
Irven Avila opened the scoring after 25 minutes for Sporting Cristal and Libertad missed a chance to level when Sergio Aquino failed to convert a penalty.
And Avila's second, scored with 20 minutes to go, looked like it would be enough to give Sporting Cristal all three points.
But the hosts staged a valiant fightback and, buoyed by their home crowd, defender Pedro Benitez pulled a goal back on 68 minutes.
And with just two minutes to play, Aquino set up Ariel Nunez for a dramatic equaliser.
Libertad are still on top of Group 2 while Sporting Cristal sit second with four points.
In the same group, Tigre notched a 1-0 home win over Palmeiras of Brazil with Gabriel Penalba scoring the winner for the Argentines.
Elsewhere, Brazilian outfit Fluminense played out a 1-1 draw against Chilean side Huachipato in Group 8 and Luis Tejada's late equaliser gave Toluca of Mexico a point in a 1-1 draw in Group 1 against Ecuador's Barcelona.
