Bio

Born in Salto, Uruguay on 14 February 1987, Edinson Roberto Cavani Gómez, usually known more simply as Edinson Cavani, has emerged as one of the top strikers in the world since moving to Europe in 2007. A prolific goalscorer, he is known for his energetic displays, as well as his ability to score spectacular goals.

A product of Danubio FC's youth academy, Cavani made his debut for the senior side as a teenager in 2005. He went on to score 12 goals in 30 appearances for the team, but after impressing in the 2007 South American Youth Championship in January, he attracted attention from several teams in Serie A. At the end of the month, Palermo announced that they had signed the striker for a fee of around €5 million.

During three-and-a-half years with Palermo, Cavani further cemented his reputation as one of the brightest young stars in world football, reaching double figures for goals in both 2008-09 and 2009-10. In the summer of 2010, he moved to Napoli for an eventual transfer fee of €17 million and it took little time for Cavani to settle in Naples. Indeed, in his debut season for the club, he scored 33 goals in 47 games in all competitions. During his second season, he picked up his first major trophy, the Coppa Italia, finishing as the competition's top goalscorer. Then, in 2012-13, he scored 29 league goals to finish as Serie A's top scorer. Ahead of the 2013-14 season, Cavani completed a big money transfer to Paris Saint Germain for just under €65 million. Since joining PSG, he has continued his fine goalscoring form.

Cavani made his debut for the senior Uruguay national team in 2008 and has since earned more than 50 caps for his country. He featured in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, helping Uruguay to fourth place in the tournament, and then played in the team that won the 2011 Copa América title.
