Bio

Gianluigi Buffon, sometimes known by the shortened name of Gigi Buffon, was born in Carrara, Italy on 28 January 1978. Noted for his shot-stopping, commanding presence and leadership, he is considered by many to be the best goalkeeper of his generation and one of the best goalkeepers of all time. In 2006, he was the runner up for the Ballon d'Or award.

Having joined Parma's youth academy as a 13 year old in 1991, he graduated and made his first team debut in 1995, at the age of just 17. Over the course of the next few seasons, Buffon established himself as the club's number one goalkeeper and one of the biggest prospects in world football. In 2001, he completed a move to Juventus, for a transfer fee in excess of €51 million. As a result, he became the most expensive goalkeeper in history.

In 2001–02 and 2002-03, he helped Juventus to win consecutive Serie A titles and was named as the 2003 UEFA Club Footballer of the Year, becoming the first goalkeeper to ever win the award. Further Serie A titles followed in 2011–12 and 2012–13. Buffon's consistency throughout the years is demonstrated by the fact that he has been named as the Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year on eight occasions, while also being included in the UEFA Team of the Year for 2003, 2004 and 2006. In addition, the International Federation of Football History & Statistics named him as the best goalkeeper of the decade 2000–2009.

Buffon made his debut for Italy's senior national team in 1997 and has since gone on to become the country's record appearance holder, earning well over 100 caps. He was a key member of the team which won the 2006 FIFA World Cup and was named in the tournament's All-Star Team. He was also named in the Team of the Tournament for both Euro 2008 and Euro 2012.
