Bio

Jakub Błaszczykowski was born in Truskolasy, Poland on 14 December 1985. Primarily a right winger, he is also able to play in central midfield and is known for his dribbling, pace, creativity and ability to keep possession of the ball under pressure.

Błaszczykowski began his football career in 1993, as a youth player for Raków Częstochowa. During his time with the club, he endured a personal tragedy, as he witnessed his father stab his mother to death. Although the incident temporarily halted his progress, he was encouraged to continue playing football by his uncle, former Poland national team captain Jerzy Brzęczek. In 2002, Błaszczykowski joined Górnik Zabrze and a year later, he moved to KS Częstochowa. During the 2002-03 season, he made his senior debut for the club, who were playing in Poland's fourth tier at the time.

After a successful trial which had been arranged by his uncle, Błaszczykowski joined Wisła Kraków in 2005. He quickly broke into the first team, appearing 11 times in the second half of the 2004-05 season and helping them to win the Ekstraklasa title. In 2006, he was named the Ekstraklasa Midfielder of the Year, while his performances during his final season in 2006-07 saw him named in the Ekstraklasa Best XI.

In February 2007, Błaszczykowski signed for Borussia Dortmund and joined up with the squad prior to the start of the 2007-08 season. He broke into the first team and emerged as a fan favourite, being voted as the Dortmund Player of the Year for 2008. In 2010–11, Błaszczykowski and Dortmund won the Bundesliga title and the following season, they retained their league crown and won the DFB-Pokal. For both 2008 and 2010, he was named the Polish Footballer of the Year.

Błaszczykowski made his first appearance for Poland's national team in 2006 and subsequently cemented his place in the team, becoming one of their key players. He has since earned more than 50 caps. In 2010, he was voted as the national team's best player and became captain of the side the same year. Błaszczykowski played a role for the team at UEFA Euro 2012 and was named as the Man of the Match for their group stage match against Russia.
