Bio

Javier Martínez Aginaga, usually shortened to Javi Martínez, was born in Estella, Spain on 2 September 1988. Known for his passing, workrate, physicality and aerial ability, he primarily plays as a defensive midfielder, although over the years he has also demonstrated his capability as a central defender.

During his youth, Martínez played for various academy sides, including Izarra and Osasuna. He made the step up and played for Osasuna's 'B' team from 2005 to 2006, before signing for Athletic Bilbao as a 17-year-old, for a transfer fee of around €6 million. After arriving at Bilbao, he quickly became an important first team player and made 36 appearances in all competitions during his debut season. The 2009-10 campaign proved to be particularly successful for Martínez, as he was named the La Liga Breakthrough Player of the Year and scored nine goals in all competitions; the best tally of his career.

After Marcelo Bielsa took over as manager, Martínez found himself increasingly asked to play as a centre back, although made it clear that he preferred his previous midfield role. In the summer of 2012, German giants Bayern Munich activated the €40 million release clause in his contract and he moved to the Bundesliga. His first season with the club brought about huge success, as the team won the Bundesliga title, the DFB-Pokal and the UEFA Champions League, before adding the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup later in 2013. Martínez was especially singled out for praise after Bayern's Champions League semi final victory over Barcelona.

On the international stage, Martínez represented Spain at various youth levels, most notably captaining the Under-21 side to success at the 2011 European Championships. He made his debut for the senior national team in 2010 and played a small role in Spain's successes at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the 2012 European Championships, making one appearance in each of those competitions.
