Bio

João Filipe Iria Santos Moutinho, usually known as João Moutinho, was born in Portimão, Algarve on 8 September 1986. Primarily a central midfielder, he is known for his passing, creative talents, set pieces, workrate and tackling. His versatility allows him to function in both holding and attacking midfield roles and he is also able to play as a winger when required.

As a youngster, Moutinho played for his local side, Portimonense, before moving to the Sporting Clube de Portugal youth academy in 1999. He made the breakthrough to the senior squad as a 17 year old during the 2004-05 season, making a total of 26 appearances in all competitions and helping the side to reach the UEFA Cup final. From the following season onwards, he became a regular starter for the club, helping them to win the Taça de Portugal in both 2006–07 and 2007–08.

During the summer of 2010, Moutinho completed a controversial move to Sporting's rivals, FC Porto, with Sporting's chairman, José Eduardo Bettencourt, branding him as a "rotten apple". Nonetheless, his first season with FC Porto was immensely successful, as the team won the Primeira Liga title, the Taça de Portugal and the UEFA Europa League. Additional league successes followed in 2011–12 and 2012–13, with Moutinho playing an important role in both campaigns. At the conclusion of the 2012-13 season, he was named as FC Porto's Player of the Year.

Prior to the start of the 2013-14 campaign, Moutinho completed a move to Monaco for a fee believed to be in the region of €25 million. Upon arriving at the club, he quickly became an important first team player, usually being deployed as a central midfielder, with a licence to get forward and join in attacks.

Moutinho has represented Portugal at international level since 2005, earning well over 50 caps. He was included as part of the country's squads for both UEFA Euro 2008 and Euro 2012, but missed out on the squad for the 2010 World Cup. At Euro 2012, he helped Portugal to reach the semi finals, where they drew with Spain. However, in the penalty shootout which followed, Moutinho missed his penalty and Spain progressed to the final.
