Bio

Leonardo Bonucci was born in Viterbo, Italy on 1 May 1987. Despite being a central defender, he is known for his technique, superb range of passing and ability to carry the ball forwards, which often enables quick counter attacks.

After beginning his career in Viterbese's youth academy, Bonucci was loaned to Internazionale in 2005. Initially competing in the club's under-20 team, he made his debut for the senior team at the end of the 2005-06 season and Internazionale signed him on a permanent basis in the summer of 2006. During the 2006-07 season, he failed to add to his sole league appearance for the side, although he did feature in three Coppa Italia games. In the summer of 2007, he completed a move to Treviso and spent two seasons with the club, before spending a season at Pisa and a season at Bari.

His performances at Bari, in particular, drew national attention, as he formed a formidable defensive partnership with Andrea Ranocchia. Ahead of the 2010-11 campaign, Bonucci signed for Juventus and immediately became a first team player, often featuring in a back three, along with Giorgio Chiellini and Andrea Barzagli. During the 2011-12 season, Bonucci played a large role in helping Juventus to win the Serie A title, and the team went through the entire league season unbeaten. The following season, he was once again a key figure as the team retained their Serie A crown.

Bonucci made his debut for Italy's national team in 2010, becoming a rare example of an Italian international who had never played for his country at youth level. Although he made the squad for the 2010 World Cup, he remained an unused substitute throughout. After being included in the squad for Euro 2012, he was utilised as an important first team player and started almost every game, as Italy finished as runners up.
