Bio

Born in Rosario, Santa Fe on 24 June 1987, Lionel Messi is widely regarded as the best footballer of his generation and is considered by many to be the greatest player of all time. Throughout his career, he has played in a number of roles, including as a winger and as a centre forward and is known for his pace, dribbling ability, creative play and prolific goalscoring.

Having played football at youth level for Newell's Old Boys, Messi soon attracted attention from River Plate. However, he was diagnosed with a growth hormone deficiency at the age of 11 and the club were unwilling to invest in his treatment. FC Barcelona's sporting director, Carles Rexach, was soon made aware of his talent and agreed to pay the necessary medical expenses if Messi relocated to Spain. He officially joined the Catalan giants' youth academy in 2000.

After making his way through the ranks, playing for Barcelona C and Barcelona B, Lionel Messi made his competitive debut for the senior team in 2004. His playing style quickly drew comparisons with compatriot, Diego Maradona, and in May 2005, he scored his first senior goal for the club. In the years since, Messi has grown into a phenomenon, helping the side to win a huge number of trophies at domestic and continental level, including the UEFA Champions League in 2005–06, 2008–09 and 2010–11.

At the age of just 24, Messi became Barcelona's all-time greatest goalscorer and in the 2011-12 campaign, he set a European record for the most goals scored in a single season, with 73 goals in all competitions. In 2012, he became the first player in history to be awarded the Ballon d'Or four times. In addition, he was named FIFA World Player of the Year and UEFA Club Footballer of the Year in 2009.

At international level, Messi helped Argentina to Olympic gold in 2008 and was named as his country's captain in 2011.
