Bio

Luis Alberto Suárez Díaz, usually known as Luis Suarez, was born in Salto, Uruguay on 24 January 1987. A prolific goalscorer at both club and international level, he is known for his dribbling ability, work rate, technique and pace.

Suarez began his professional career with Nacional and moved to the Netherlands in 2006, to join Groningen. His performances there attracted the attention of Ajax, who signed him the following year. At the end of the 2008-09 season, he was named Ajax Player of the Year and ahead of the 2009-10 season, he was made club captain. That campaign brought about his best performances for the club, as he scored 49 goals in 48 games and was named Dutch Footballer of the Year.

In January 2011, Suarez joined Liverpool and quickly became a fan favourite. He helped the side to a League Cup win in 2011–12 and was named in the PFA Team of the Year for the 2012-13 season, during which he scored 23 league goals. Although linked with a move to Arsenal during the summer of 2013, Suarez remained with Liverpool and forged a deadly partnership with fellow striker Daniel Sturridge.

Throughout his career so far, Suarez has been involved in a number of controversial incidents. During the 2010 FIFA World Cup, he was labelled a cheat after intentionally blocking a goal-bound shot with his hands during a quarter final match with Ghana. Later in the same year, whilst playing for Ajax, he bit PSV player Otman Bakkal and received a seven match ban. In October 2011, Suarez was accused of racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra and after being found guilty, was suspended for eight games. The following season, he bit Chelsea's Branislav Ivanović and received a ten match ban.

However, despite these moments of controversy, Suarez is widely regarded as one of the world's best strikers. At international level, he helped Uruguay to their 15th Copa América title in 2011.
