Bio

Marcelo Vieira da Silva Júnior, usually shortened to Marcelo, was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on 12 May 1988. A left back, who is also capable of playing as a winger, he is known for his overlapping runs, dribbling ability and creative talents. Over the years, his style of play has been frequently compared to that of Roberto Carlos and he has been hailed by various observers, including Carlos himself, as one of the best left backs in world football.

After joining Fluminense's youth academy in 2002, he broke into the club's senior squad in 2005 and went on to appear for the first team on 30 occasions. During the 2007 January transfer window, he completed a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid and their head coach at the time, Fabio Capello, awarded him his first start in April of that year, against Racing de Santander. At the end of the season, he picked up a La Liga winner's medal and became an important part of the side which retained the title in 2007–08, under the management of Bernd Schuster.

However, during early 2009, some of his performances attracted criticism and manager Juande Ramos opted to play Gabriel Heinze at left back instead, deploying Marcelo further forward as a traditional winger. He adapted well to the role and continued to be used as a winger by new manager Manuel Pellegrini during the 2009-10 season.

With José Mourinho serving as Real Madrid manager, the 2010-11 campaign proved to be a breakthrough season for Marcelo, as he returned to his preferred role as a left back. The team won the Copa del Rey and his performances across the season drew widespread praise, with Diego Maradona describing him as one of La Liga's best players. Marcelo was later named as part of the 2011 UEFA Team of the Year. The following season, he played 32 league matches as Real Madrid were crowned as La Liga champions, with Marcelo earning a place in the 2012 FIFA/FIFPro World XI. After an injury-hit season in 2012-13, he became a regular fixture in the team once again during the 2013-14 campaign.

Marcelo made his debut for the Brazil national team against Wales in 2006 and scored his first senior international goal in the same match. In 2013, he was part of the Brazil team which won the FIFA Confederations Cup.
