Bio

Mats Hummels was born in Bergisch Gladbach, West Germany on 16 December 1988. A tall, right-footed defender, who prefers to play on the left side of a centre back pairing, he is known for his strength, reading of the game and ability to bring the ball forward to start counter-attacks. His style of play has often been compared to that of the legendary German international, Franz Beckenbauer.

Having joined Bayern Munich's youth academy at the age of just six, Hummels climbed through the ranks and signed his first professional contract with the side at the end of 2006. Over the course of 2006 and 2007, he became a regular for the reserve team. Then, during the final match of the 2006-07 season, Hummels made his Bundesliga debut in a victory over Mainz 05.

After failing to add to his sole Bundesliga appearance during the first half of the 2007-08 season, Hummels was sent on loan to Borussia Dortmund in January 2008 and played his way into the starting 11. In February 2009, Dortmund opted to sign him on a permanent basis for a fee of €4 million, although he missed much of the second half of the 2008-09 season through injury.

The 2010-11 campaign marked something of a breakthrough for Hummels, as his partnership with Neven Subotić excelled and Dortmund won the Bundesliga title. Throughout the season, Dortmund conceded less goals than any other team and Hummels received particularly high praise, being rated by many observers as one of Europe's best central defenders. In 2011–12, the team retained their league crown and also lifted the DFB-Pokal. For both 2010–11 and 2011–12, Hummels was named in the European Sports Media Team of the Year. At the conclusion of the 2012-13 season, he was named in the starting lineup for the UEFA Champions League final, although Dortmund lost the match 2-1 to Bayern Munich. Later in 2013, Hummels and Dortmund gained some revenge, beating Bayern 4-2 to win the DFL-Supercup.

At youth level, Hummels enjoyed international success, helping Germany to win the 2009 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship. He made his debut for the senior team in 2010 and established himself in the side ahead of the 2012 European Championships. Hummels went on to play every minute for the team during the tournament and received widespread praise for his performances.
