Bio

Born in Gelsenkirchen on 15 October 1988, Mesut Özil is regarded as one of the most creative players in world football. The Germany international plays as an attacking midfielder and is known for his superb vision and technique. His former manager at Real Madrid, José Mourinho, described him as "the best number 10 in the world."

Özil began his professional career at Schalke 04 and impressed them with his ability, but a falling out with management led to his transfer to Werder Bremen in January 2008. While at Bremen, Özil filled the void left by Brazilian midfielder Diego, and helped guide the side to a DFB-Pokal win and a UEFA Cup final appearance in 2009.

That summer, Mesut Özil played a starring role for Germany as they won the UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship and was named Man of the Match for the tournament's final against England. After making the step up to the senior side, Özil attracted international recognition for his performances in the 2010 FIFA World Cup, where he was considered one of the players of the tournament. As a result, he secured a move to Real Madrid ahead of the 2010-11 season.

His first season at Real Madrid was a success, with the club winning the Copa del Rey. For his part, Özil was able to provide a total of 25 assists in all competitions; more than any other player in Europe. In 2011-12, Madrid were crowned as La Liga champions and Özil was nominated for the FIFA Ballon d'Or and UEFA Best Player in Europe awards. His good performances continued in 2012-13 and he ended that campaign with 26 assists.

However, on the last day of the 2013 summer transfer window, Özil made a surprise move from Real Madrid to Arsenal, for a fee of around £42.5 million. The transfer made him the most expensive German footballer ever and he quickly became a key player for the North London club.
