No Messi No Tickets

By Juan Arango

It might not be as worrying as it was a couple of weeks ago for Barcelona, but that preoccupation now lies squarely on the shoulders of the Argentine FA (AFA).  Lionel Messi's hamstring is one of worry for Alejandro Sabella now and his staff as they prepare for the upcoming World Cup Qualifiers against Colombia and Ecuador next month.  Messi biceps femoris tear will have him out, most likely, at the the competitive level and it would be beyond crazy to risk him for a friendly match.

The second group of individuals to be intensely worried are the promoters for the upcoming Albiceleste friendly against Guatemala at the Estadio Mateo Flores in that nation's capital. Guatemala backed out of a friendly that was originally scehduled with World Champions Spain in Miami, but when the opportunity rose to be able to play against the reigning four-time Ballon D'Or winner with a huge payday, they didn't bat an eyelash.

Sales for that international friendly were going to begin today, but promoters decided to postpone the sale of the tickets until FC Barcelona's medical staff give an official statement on the status of the Albiceleste captain.

Obviously, the lack of Messi will put a huge damper on the event for all sides.  The promoters will have less tickets sold because Argentina's main marketing tool will not be available.  Messi is not there and AFA will not get the money that they would be getting if Messi were to play.  Also the fans would get to miss out on the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the best player on the planet in person.
