Bio

Ramires Santos do Nascimento, usually shortened to Ramires, was born in Barra do Piraí, Brazil on 24 March 1987. A box-to-box midfielder, he is able to operate centrally or on the right wing and can help the team as an attacking player, or function in a more disciplined defensive midfield role. Ramires is known for his workrate, stamina, speed and versatility. In terms of his playing style, he has often been compared to Michael Essien.

Having started his youth team career with Royal Sport Club in 2004, Ramires moved to Joinville in 2005 and graduated to the senior side in 2006, eventually playing 14 games for the club and scoring three goals. In 2007, he moved to Cruzeiro for a fee of $300,000 and spent three seasons with the side, helping them to win the Campeonato Mineiro in 2008 and 2009.

Prior to the beginning of the 2009-10 season, Ramires completed a move to Portuguese club Benfica, in order to test himself in the European game. Over the course of the campaign, he played 43 matches in all competitions, scoring five goals and helping the team to win both the Primeira Liga and the Taça da Liga. After just one season with Benfica, Ramires moved to England to join Chelsea for a transfer fee in the region of €22 million.

Ramires quickly became a regular member of the Chelsea team and soon emerged as a fan favourite due to his energetic performances. The 2011-12 season was particularly successful, as the team won both the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup, with Ramires being voted as the Chelsea Players' Player of the Year. Throughout the campaign, he played a total of 47 games in all competitions and scored 12 goals; his highest ever tally for a single season. The following year brought with it further European success, as Ramires and Chelsea won the UEFA Europa League trophy.

On the international stage, Ramires played for Brazil during the 2008 Olympic Games and then made his debut for the senior national team in 2009. He has since represented his country in various major tournaments, including the 2010 World Cup, and helped the team to win the FIFA Confederations Cup in 2009.
