Bio

Robin van Persie was born in Rotterdam on 6 August 1983. Known for his goalscoring ability, as well as his excellent technique, over the years he has drawn comparisons with some of the great Dutch players, including Marco van Basten and Dennis Bergkamp. Van Persie is widely considered to be one of the best centre forwards in the world today.

As a youngster, Robin van Persie joined SBV Excelsior's youth academy and then moved to Feyenoord as a 15-year-old. After breaking into the club's first team, he was able to help the side to win the UEFA Cup in 2002, but fell out with manager Bert van Marwijk and moved to Arsenal in 2004.

During his time at Arsenal, van Persie was converted from a winger into a centre forward and was initially tipped to be the club's long-term replacement for Dennis Bergkamp. Injuries hindered his career for many years, although he was able to contribute to the team's 2005 FA Cup success. After Thierry Henry's departure in 2007, van Persie became the club's main striker and after Cesc Fabregas moved to Barcelona in 2011, he was appointed captain. Subsequently, van Persie enjoyed his best individual season for the club in 2011-12, scoring 37 goals in all competitions and winning the Premier League's Golden Boot. As a result of his performances, he was named FWA Player of the Year, PFA Players' Player of the Year and PFA Fans' Player of the Year.

The summer of 2012 saw him complete a surprise move to Manchester United for around £24 million. He took little time to settle at the club and quickly became a fan favourite, scoring 26 league goals and winning the Golden Boot, as Manchester United were crowned 2012-13 Premier League champions.

At international level, van Persie captains the Netherlands and is the national team's all-time top goalscorer. He was part of the team that finished as runners up in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
