About

Sivasspor were founded in the city of Sivas back in 1967, after a merger between Sivas Gençlik, Yolspor and Kızılırmak led to the combined club turning professional. In recent years, Sivasspor have started to challenge for major honours and European qualification.

On 17th September 1967, during a match against Kayseri Erciyesspor, violence erupted in the stands between the supporters of the two clubs. According to reports, after the opening goal, Sivasspor supporters threw rocks at the Kayseri Erciyesspor fans, provoking a response from them. Many supporters attempted to flee the violence, causing a stampede. The stadium's exit gate malfunctioned and, as a result, 41 supporters died and around 300 more were injured in the crush. The incident is seen as the worst case of crowd violence in the history of Turkish football. In the aftermath, te two teams were banned from playing each other for five years and were forced to play out the remainder of the season behind closed doors, with no fans in attendance.

In 2004-05, Sivasspor were crowned champions of Turkey's second tier, gaining the club automatic promotion to the Süper Lig. The 2005-06 season marked the team's first ever season in the top flight and they have remained there ever since. In 2007-08, the club enjoyed a remarkable season, finishing in 4th place, level on points with 2nd-placed Fenerbahçe. The following season brought even greater success, with Sivasspor finishing in 2nd place, having led the league table for a substantial amount of time. As a result, the club gained entry into the UEFA Champions League for the first time.

Amongst the more notable players to have played for the club since their arrival in the top tier of Turkish football are Abdurrahman Dereli and Mehmet Yıldız.

Sivasspor play their home matches at the Sivas 4 Eylül Stadium, which opened in 1985. The ground underwent renovations in 2006 and currently has a maximum capacity of 14,998.
