About

Football Club Volga Nizhny Novgorod, commonly known by the more simply name Volga, was established in 1963 as a result of a merger between two clubs from Nizhny Novgorod, 'Raketa' and 'Torpedo'. The club has experienced a dramatic rise through the divisions in the Russian league system since the turn of the 21st century.

Volga spent several seasons in the Soviet Top League, although their performances were not strong and their best ever finish was fourteenth place during the mid 1960s. In 1984, the club closed its doors and would not return until 1998, under the name Elektronika. As of 2000, the new club was playing in the 4th tier of Russian football. In 2004, the club took on its current name.

Although major success has alluded Volga so far, their dramatic rise through the Russian leagues is a huge achievement in itself. After gaining promotion to the Russian Second Division ahead of the 2001 season, the club established itself in the league and remained there for several years. In 2008, they pushed on and won the league, gaining promotion to the Russian First Division. Their stay in the second tier would be short and, after just two seasons, Volga were promoted to the Russian Premier League for the first time ahead of the 2011-12 season.

Several full international footballers have played for Volga and some of the more notable examples include the Russian internationals Andrei Karyaka, Andrey Yeshchenko and Taras Burlak. In 2013, Dutch international winger Romeo Castelen joined the club from Hamburger.

At present, Volga are playing their home matches at the Lokomotiv Central Stadium, which opened its doors in 2000. The stadium was previously the home of FC Lokomotiv Nizhny Novgorod, who disbanded back in 2006. The ground is currently able to hold a maximum of 17,800 spectators.
