There was a growing sense of optimism permeating around Appiano Gentile last week that the club were ready to make a charge for the last Champions League spot. Milito was healthy again and had just scored in his first game back against Chievo in the Nerazzurri’s most impressive display in months.

However, Il Principe’s season came to a premature end when he suffered a cruciate knee injury in the 2-0 win over Cluj in the Europa League last Thursday.

Messages of support came flooding in from around the globe and instead of rallying around their talismanic striker in their first game since the injury, the squad felt sorry for themselves and were embarrassed in Florence.

The players need to get their heads right and fast, as a date with Milan looms this weekend.
