Bio

Xabier Alonso Olano, commonly known as Xabi Alonso, was born in Tolosa, Spain on 25 November 1981. A central midfielder, who is usually deployed as a deep-lying playmaker, he is noted for his technique, vision and range of passing.

A product of the Real Sociedad youth academy, Alonso graduated and made his senior debut in 1999, quickly emerging as a hot prospect. At the age of just 20, the club's manager, John Toshack, awarded Alonso the captain's armband and he thrived in the role, helping the team to finish as La Liga runners up for 2002–03 and being named as the 2003 Spanish Player of the Year. Ahead of the 2004-05 season, he completed a move to the English Premier League, joining Liverpool for a fee in excess of £10 million.

His first season in England brought about huge success, as Liverpool won the UEFA Champions League. The team completed a dramatic comeback from 3-0 down in the final against AC Milan, with Alonso scoring the equalising goal. Further major success came in 2006, as the club collected the FA Cup. During his time with Liverpool, he also achieved a unique feat by scoring two goals from inside his own half, the first against Luton and the second against Newcastle United. Prior to the 2009-10 season, Alonso transferred to Real Madrid for £30 million. Since returning to La Liga, he has helped the team to win the Copa Del Rey in 2010–11 and the league title in 2011-12.

At international level, Alonso has frequently played for Spain's senior national team since 2003 and was involved in their 2010 World Cup win, as well as their successes at the 2008 and 2012 European Championships. During Euro 2012, he earned his 100th cap and was eventually named in the Team of the Tournament. In addition to playing for Spain, Alonso has also played friendly matches for the Basque Country regional team.
