Bio

Łukasz Piszczek was born in Czechowice-Dziedzice, Poland on 3 June 1985. Now primarily a right full back, over the years he has displayed remarkable versatility, playing as a defensive midfielder, a winger and even as a striker early in his career. He is known for his creativity, crossing and accurate passing, as well as his ability to score goals.

Piszczek began his youth career with LKS Goczałkowice-Zdrój, before moving to Gwarek Zabrze's academy in 2001. During his three years with the side, he contributed to their Polish Youth Championship success in 2003 and subsequently earned a move to Hertha BSC in 2004. Almost immediately, he was sent on loan to Zagłębie Lubin in order to gain more first team experience.

Over the course of three seasons with Zagłębie Lubin, Piszczek demonstrated his offensive skills and became a key member of their squad. In the 2006-07 season, he helped them to win the Polish league title, marking his first major success as a footballer. Throughout the campaign, he was utilised in various attacking positions and finished the season with 12 goals in all competitions, making him the club's second highest goalscorer. As a result of his impressive performances, he was recalled to the Hertha BSC squad ahead of the 2007-08 season.

Upon his return, Piszczek was initially used in defensive midfield or on the wing, but was converted to right back after Arne Friedrich suffered an injury. Although he lost his place in the side when Friedrich recovered, he cemented his place in the team in the 2009-10 season, with Friedrich moving across to central defence. In the summer of 2010, Piszczek moved to Germany to join Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer. He helped the club to win back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2010–11 and 2011–12, scoring his first goal for the club during the latter campaign.

On the international stage, Piszczek represented Poland at youth level, notably finishing as the top goalscorer at the 2004 UEFA European Under-19 Championship. He made the step up to senior level in 2007 and has since established himself as an important member of the team. At UEFA Euro 2012, he participated in all three of his country's matches and put in assured performances throughout. Then, in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup, he scored his first two goals for the team, with both strikes coming just days apart, in March 2013.
