The Moose is well down the list in yards gained for the Cowboys, but that is not the measuring stick that determined Johnston’s placing on this list. Suffice it to say, without Daryl Johnston plowing the road, Emmitt Smith might not have found his way to the pinnacle of all-time NFL rushers.
Johnston actually produced better numbers as a receiver than as a runner. He hauled in 294 receptions for 2,227 yards and 14 touchdowns, against just 753 yards and eight scores on 232 carries.
It was Johnston’s punishing blocking that got him to two Pro Bowls during his 11 seasons in the NFL and, while Johnston ranks third among all Cowboys running backs and just 27th in rushing yardage, he is clearly the top fullback of all time in Cowboys’ history.
