While the 49ers don’t have any immediately pressing contractual situations in 2014, the list of potential 2015 free agents is an important one. Tarell Brown and Donte Whitner both come off the books in 2014, and at least one of them should be retained in the secondary. While Brown and Whitener are nice pieces for San Francisco’s defense, Colin Kaepernick, Michael Crabtree, Mike Iupati, and Aldon Smith are all free agents in 2015. Additionally, Chris Culliver and Kendall Hunter will also be free agents but the former four players are franchise cornerstones.

In all likelihood, the Niners will begin exploring contract extensions with next offseason, but expect some of these guys to field questions on their situation during camp. While Jim Harbaugh is certainly a master at deflecting questions, we’ll see if he has passed that trait to his players. Donte Whitner, in particular, is very outspoken, and as one of many leaders on the 49ers’ defense, it will be interesting to see if he drops any quotes on the topic.
