OFFENBACH, GERMANY - APRIL 05: Abby Wambach of the United States celebrates after scoring her team's first goal during the Women's International Friendly match between Germany and the United States at Sparda-Bank-Hessen-Stadion on April 5, 2013 in Offenbach, Germany

Scoring two goals in their 2-1 victory over FC Kansas City, Western New York Flash striker Abby Wambach was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 5 of the 2013 NWSL season.

"Anytime a player individually is recognized for their play is a direct reflection on the success of the team," Wambach said. "Our defense has played so well these last two weeks, and that's why we won those games.  I'm happy to be a part of winning for my team."

Wambach scored twice in five minutes during the first half to lift the Flash to a 2-0 halftime lead. It was the first time a player or team scored two or more goals against FC Kansas City.  She could have easily had a hat trick with as many close chances she created. She also had four shots, all on goal in that match.

The U.S. international is now tied for second best in the league for goals scored. She also ranks third in shots (16) and shots on goal. (10)

The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a selection of journalists that cover the league on a consistent basis.
