Bio

Adem Ljajić was born in Novi Pazar, SFR Yugoslavia on 29 September 1991. A versatile attacking player, he can play on either of the flanks, in an attacking midfield role or as a centre forward. Ljajić is known for his creative talents, dribbling, accurate passing, long range shooting and ability to retain possession.

Having started his career with Jošanica, Ljajić joined Partizan's youth academy in 2005, at the age of 14. He made the step up to first team level in 2008, appearing in a Champions League qualifier in July. His first season brought with it instant success, as Partizan won the 2008-09 Serbian SuperLiga and Serbian Cup, completing a domestic double. Ljajić played a total of 33 games over the course of the campaign, weighing in with six goals.

Throughout the course of the 2008-09 season, Ljajić spent a significant amount of time with Manchester United, first on trial and then training with the first team. In January 2009, United confirmed that he would join the club in 2010, after seeing out the remainder of the year with Partizan. However, the team eventually opted not to sign the player, due to issues obtaining a work permit.

Instead, Ljajić completed a move to Fiorentina in January 2010, making 10 appearances in all competitions during the second half of the 2009-10 campaign. In the years that followed, he established himself as a regular in the team, enjoying his best goalscoring season in 2012-13, when he scored 12 goals in total. In August 2013, he moved to Roma for a fee of €11 million and scored his first goal for the club on his debut, against Hellas Verona.

Ljajić played youth international football for Serbia from 2007 onwards, before making the step up to senior level in 2010. However, his international career was put on hold during Siniša Mihajlović's reign as national team coach, after Ljajić refused to sing the national anthem for personal reasons. Mihajlović ruled it as a violation of his code of conduct and explained that he would no longer include Ljajić in the team. He made his return to the Serbia national team in March 2014, after Ljubinko Drulović was appointed as manager.
