Wright isn’t the only Charger who has been waiting for his opportunity.
Cam Thomas is expected to step in as the starting nose tackle. Thomas improved dramatically in 2012 but has big shoes to fill with the departures of Franklin and Garay.
Free safety Eric Weddle will once again be starting alongside a new strong safety. Cornerback Marcus Gilchrist could make the move to safety if 2012 third-round pick Brandon Taylor isn’t ready by training camp. Taylor tore his ACL last December against the Jets.
Throw in rookie linebacker Manti Te’o and veteran outside linebacker/defensive end Dwight Freeney and San Diego’s defense is practically brand new.
The Chargers will likely start as many as four players who have never been starters in the NFL, as wells as two who will start for a new team.
