The New York Jets’ 20-7 win over the Miami Dolphins — which knocked Miami out of playoff contention — was all owner Woody Johnson needed to see. He has officially announced that head coach Rex Ryan will be returning in 2014.

"We're going to keep Rex Ryan, and he's going to be our coach next year," Johnson said. "I couldn't be any prouder of this team."

Ryan told his players the other week that he expected to be fired, but the team’s brass apparently changed course and gave him a vote of confidence by confirming his return. The team didn’t have anything to play for in their final game, but they put it all on the line for their coach. Although, knocking one of their division rivals out of playoff contention had to feel good for the team.

"To finish the way we did, in our estimation, a playoff-type atmosphere for us, guys responded," Idzik said. "Suffice it to say, we're very happy with Rex as our coach."

Ryan has done an admirable job in New York. The Jets entered the season with extremely low expectations, but they somehow managed to finish the season with an 8-8 record and overcome rookie QB Geno Smith’s inconsistent, turnover-prone play.
