News has broke from California that San Jose has acquired a new deadly weapon. The Earthquakes have acquired winger Yannick Djalo from Portuguese side Benfica on loan. The loan is season long and will begin once his P-1 and international transfer certificate clear.
Djalo, 27, has spent six years in Portugal's first division and one in France. The winger also has a goal to his credit in the UEFA Champions League. While with the Sporting Lisbon Development Academy, Djalo won five cups.
“We’re excited to announce the signing of Yannick,” Earthquakes head coach Mark Watson stated per the teams website. “There was a lot of work and time spent scouting in the offseason, and we feel like we have a very good player in Yannick. He adds a versatile, attacking dimension to our team. He can operate as an attacking midfielder, but also has the pace to get behind defenders.”
This is a great move by San Jose at the start of the season. Djalo brings a new dimension of speed to the roster. While I don't think he will be ready to start in San Jose's CONCACAF match against Toluca FC, there remains a possibility that he can be ready for the match against Real Salt Lake.
In combination with JJ Koval and Chris Wondolowski, Djalo presents another offensive catalyst. While San Jose's chances to make the playoffs aren't great, with a few strokes of luck they could slip in as a dark horse.
