England and Uruguay would meet in a game that both teams needed to win to keep their World Cup dreams alive. The game would see Suarez return to the lineup for Uruguay, as they looked to make up for the poor second half performance against Costa Rica that saw them lose 3-1. England on the other hand were looking to continue their positive start even though they lost to Italy 2-1. The game kicked off quite evenly as both teams battled it out in the midfield for control of the game. Rooney would have England's first chance as he tried his luck from just outside the top of the box. Though the curling free kick would clear the wall it would go wide of the post. The chances were being limited by both sides as the defences were both very tight not allowing much space for the forwards. Uruguay's first chance came after some good passing that caught England off guard in the back. The ball would swing from the right side and Suarez would feed the ball to the left. The oncoming Rodriguez would meet the ball in stride and thunder a shot at the England goal. He had the keeper beat but the ball just wouldn't stay down and would fly over the crossbar.

The match continued on as the midfield battle continued with neither team really showing the other up. Uruguay would have a good spell of possession where they threatened the defence, but apart from a cleverly taken corner kick that saw Cavani blast his shot over the cross bar, never really troubled Hart's goal. England would follow up with a good spell of their own that saw Rooney try a header from close range only to see it bounce off the crossbar. Then after being quiet for most of the half Suarez would get the opening goal just before the halftime whistle. Suarez broke well down the middle as England lost possession in the centre of the pitch. He fed the ball wide left to Cavani and continued his run into the box. Cavani did well as he faked the shot and would chip the ball into Suarez who would head the ball into the corner beating the outstretched hands of the keeper. 1-0 for Uruguay at halftime and England now 45 minutes away from seeing their World Cup campaign being over.

Uruguay kicked off the second half strong as they pressed England back into their own half early on. They won a few corner kicks but it would be Cavani once again that managed to get into space after Uruguay distributed the ball well after stopping England from countering. Cavani made a superb run into the box down the left side. All he needed to do was put the ball past the keeper, but Hart did well to make himself big and Cavani saw his shot go well wide of the mark. England then finally woke up and started to press back. Rooney once again would have England's best chance as he found himself with the ball inside the danger area. Though his low driven shot was well covered by the keeper and it summed up his and England's world cup too. The game grew more physical as the minutes ticked over as both sides started to fight for possession. A sense of urgency was shown by the England players as they pushed Uruguay into their own half and reduced the South American side to long clearances from deep in their own area. Just when things were looking grim for England and it looked like they weren't going to be able to break through, Wayne Rooney would pull a goal back with 15 minutes left to play. Sturridge managed to get into space and squared the ball across the goal. Rooney was the quickest to react and slotted from close range to draw England back on level terms.

Though just when it looked like England might have a chance to steal this game and possibly get a win, Suarez would strike once again this time in the 86th minute to crush the England fans and players and end their World Cup campaign. The Uruguayan goal keeper cleared the ball well up the pitch, the ball would skim off an England player and Suarez was left with space as he got to the ball and sprinted into the box. He fired in a thunderous shot past Hart and into the top of the net as the Uruguayan fans erupted filling the stadium with their songs.

England technically still have a chance of progressing if other results can go their way, but it is a huge ask and it surely seems that England will be on their way home not progressing through the group stage.
The other match would see Colombia defeat Ivory Coast 2-1 as they booked their place in the next round after winning both their opening matches. A good result for Colombia especially after losing Falcao so close to the finals starting.
Ciao for now Readers
