Gongbay a powerful north-south runner with excellent vision and the speed to make big plays for the Lobos in the running game. With the 2014 season dawning and 2013 leading rusher Kasey Carrier gone, Gongbay will be looked on to assume a much larger role on the ground. Was the team’s top ball carrier in 2011 and will be looking to reassume that role in 2014.
When Gongbay left Rockville High School in Rockville, Md., he was a member of the Maryland top-10 all time career rushing list with more than 5,000 yards. He rushed for 2,142 yards and 33 touchdowns as a senior and was named first-team Washington Post All-Metro and landed on the 2010 Maryland Consensus All-State team. A superb athlete, he also played basketball and track and field at Rockville.
While not a starter as a true freshman in 2011, he played in 11 of 12 games and led the Lobos in rushing with 500 yards and five touchdowns. As a sophomore in 2012, he skipped spring practice as he contemplated a transfer, but decided to return. Dropped to the bottom of the depth chart, he struggled for touches, rushing for just 159 yards in the 10 games he played. As a backup in 2013, he rushed for a career-high 592 yards and six touchdowns in all 12 games (three starts). Gongbay had a season high 95 yards against Pittsburgh and 19 carries against Fresno State. He has rushed for 1,251 yards and 11 scores in his three-year Lobo career
